Dying to Meet You - Arthropology

Stijn

Should we conflate all animals under the umbrella title 'animal'?  Should a dog only ever be 'dog' and not 'Long tailed Kevin who liked chasing cars'?

Based on an interview with a curator/taxidermist at the Natural History Museum, the ethnofiction Dying to Meet You recounts the life of Stijn the fox as he is arranged and prepared by a silent, pragmatic taxidermist. No longer simply representative of the hunt or cunning, Stijn is given something most animals are missing; an individual voice.

Together with the sculpture, the Dying to Meet You ethnofiction highlights the liminal areas between art and anthropology.

Paper delivered at Boundaries conference, Paris and Southampton University.
